An important role of Systems Engineering is the communication between engineering and its customers, both of whom speak very different languages. In this paper, Matthew Hause, highlights the need for a methodology that supports Systems Engineering concepts and a tool that allows full expression of the requirements. The system requirements are worked through for an example system using the Unified Modeling Language (UML) with real-time extensions. As a result, the requirements are more clearly and comprehensively covered, and more easily understood even by those who are unfamiliar with UML.
